Max Attwell has been a consistent force in New Zealand combined events for more than a decade. With 27 national championship medals to his name and a personal best of 7822 points, he continues to push the standard of the decathlon in New Zealand while chasing the 8000-point barrier.
A highly experienced all-round athlete, Max has built his career through persistence, longevity, and a relentless commitment to improvement across all ten disciplines. Under the guidance of coach Terry Lomax, he now has his sights firmly set on selection for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, where he hopes to deliver the performance of his career on the international stage.
The Aotearoa Athletics Trust is proud to support Max as he continues his pursuit of elite performance and international representation.
"I’m hugely grateful to the Aotearoa Athletics Trust for their support. This grant will be instrumental in my build-up to the Commonwealth Games, allowing me to focus fully on training and preparation as I work towards representing New Zealand at my best, and I’m very grateful to have the backing of an organisation so committed to helping Kiwi athletes succeed.”
Max balances elite sport with a career as a software developer. He holds degrees in both Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering, bringing the same analytical mindset to his professional life that he applies to the complexities of the decathlon. Outside of training and work, he enjoys making the most of New Zealand’s outdoors, particularly snow skiing and water skiing whenever time allows.
